UTSA hosts high school seniors from across Texas at Feb. 10 Top Scholars Dinner
Share this Story(Feb. 10, 2012) -- The University of Texas at San Antonio will court nearly 100 high school seniors and their parents at a Feb. 10 invitation-only Top Scholars Dinner hosted by university faculty and administrators. The dinner showcasing UTSA's value and opportunities gives the admitted students one-on-one time with faculty members in their chosen majors and the opportunity to ask questions to help them make their college decision.
Students invited to the event rank in the top 25 percent of their classes, have qualifying SAT or ACT scores and were admitted to UTSA. The students will sit with two scholars in their field of interest, while their parents will sit with staff and administrators with broad knowledge of student matriculation. The event will allow both the students and their parents to ask questions on the topics most important to them.
At the dinner, students will meet Jonathan Peterson-Ruiz, a Brandeis High School graduate and UTSA junior majoring in management with a concentration in international business. Like the students attending the dinner, Peterson-Ruiz was in the top 10 percent of this class. Last summer, he went to China with the UTSA Honors College. He is applying for an Archer Fellowship through the Honors College so he can spend a semester studying in Washington, D.C., before graduating. Peterson-Ruiz is a UTSA Ambassador and fluent in Spanish.
"I chose UTSA for three reasons," said Peterson-Ruiz. "They showed that they wanted me. They had everything necessary for me to succeed during and after college. And, I had the opportunity to shape the way this university will be perceived in the future. They really gave me a sense that they cared about me. They understand that it's not the university that makes the students great, but that it's the students that make the university great. You just get the feeling that you can not only be really successful but happy here, too."
More than half of the students attending Friday's dinner are ranked in the top 10 percent of their high school classes. The majority are from greater San Antonio, Austin, Houston and the Rio Grande Valley. Nearly half plan to pursue science, engineering or health-related courses of study and careers.
