The Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History and Criticism is awarded upon the completion of 120 hours, of which, 42 hours are Core Curriculum requirements. Thirty-nine of the total semester credit hours required for the degree must be at the upper-division level.
The B.A. in Art History and Criticism program offers art historical studies in the context of a liberal arts education. This degree program emphasizes critical thinking, research and writing skills in order to prepare students for careers in fields requiring a liberal arts background, or pursuing graduate studies in art history at UTSA, or another institution.
Core Curriculum requirements: Students seeking the Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History and Criticism must fulfill University Core Curriculum requirements in the same manner as other students. The courses listed in the table below satisfy both degree requirements and Core Curriculum requirements; however, if these courses are taken to satisfy both requirements, then students may need to take additional courses in order to meet the minimum number of semester credit hours required for this degree. - 9 additional semester credit hours in support work to be chosen from offerings within the College of Liberal and Fine Arts, which may include anthropology (ANT), classical studies (CLA), communication (COM), English (ENG), history (HIS), humanities (HUM), philosophy (PHI), or other subjects as individually justified by the student and approved by the Undergraduate Advisor.
- 33 semester credit hours of electives, at least 21 of which must be upper-division, and including as many semesters of a single language other than English as are necessary for the completion of the fourth UTSA semester course of that language.
Note: For the B.A. degree in Art History and Criticism, the major grade point average is calculated using ART and AHC courses, and the 9 hours of support work.
